October 19, 2026: The 2026 Social Security trustees project retirement trust fund reserve depletion in 2032, but continuing payroll taxes would still support benefits.
What the 2026 report projects
The Social Security Administration’s trustees project that reserves in the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) Trust Fund will be depleted in the fourth quarter of 2032. At that point, continuing income would cover approximately 78% of scheduled OASI benefits under the report’s assumptions. This is a projection, not an announcement that payments have already been cut.
Why 2034 is also reported
The combined retirement, survivor and disability program is projected to exhaust reserves in 2034, when ongoing income could cover around 83% of scheduled benefits. The combined figure is useful for analysis, but OASI and Disability Insurance trust funds are legally separate; using their assets interchangeably would require legislative action.
Would benefits disappear?
No. Payroll taxes would continue to provide income after trust fund reserves were depleted. The financing challenge is that projected income would be insufficient to cover every scheduled benefit in full. Lawmakers could change revenue or benefit rules before the projected dates.
What is causing the shortfall?
An aging population, longer life expectancy, the balance between workers and beneficiaries, wage trends and economic growth all influence the program’s long-term finances. Future projections may change with economic conditions and legislation.
What retirees and workers should know
No current beneficiary should interpret the report as a notice that a specific payment has stopped. The right sources for individual benefit statements and payment schedules are the Social Security Administration’s official services. Policy proposals should not be mistaken for enacted reforms.
