Associated Press reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed military cyber forces to help protect election systems against foreign threats. Election infrastructure has been designated critical infrastructure since 2017.

Election administration remains largely decentralized, with states and local jurisdictions responsible for conducting elections. Federal agencies can provide cybersecurity assistance and threat information.
