US Military to Help Protect Election Systems Ahead of 2026 Midterms

WASHINGTON: U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered military cyber and intelligence agencies to use available resources to help protect election systems from foreign threats ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections.

The move comes as election officials prepare for the November 3 vote. Election infrastructure has been designated critical infrastructure since 2017, allowing federal agencies to provide cybersecurity assistance and threat information.

Election administration itself remains largely the responsibility of states and local jurisdictions. Federal assistance is focused on cybersecurity and foreign-threat information.
