WASHINGTON: The federal Head Start program is facing proposed regulatory changes that would alter requirements for family support services, staffing and classroom operations.

Associated Press reported that the proposal would make some family-support services optional, including home visits, parental goal-setting and participation in program committees.

The administration says the changes are intended to give local programs greater flexibility. Advocates for Head Start families have raised concerns about possible effects on services that support both children and parents.
