October 27, 2026. Microsoft is offering voluntary buyout packages to around 60,000 eligible employees in participating teams, according to a Reuters report dated October 26. The offer includes eligible staff in India, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. It does not mean 60,000 employees have been laid off.
Who may qualify?
The reported time-limited program applies to eligible employees at level 70 and below in participating teams. These include AI experiences, Copilot, finance, HR, Xbox, and Windows + Devices. Other divisions are excluded. Eligibility must be confirmed through each employee’s internal communication.
Why is Microsoft offering buyouts?
The move comes amid efforts to manage costs while spending heavily on artificial-intelligence infrastructure. A voluntary buyout allows an eligible employee to choose whether to accept an offered separation package.
What should employees check before accepting?
Review the written severance terms, notice period, equity vesting, healthcare, taxes and local employment protections. The exact terms have not been independently established for each country or individual.
