MILWAUKEE: Mexico has joined the United States in backing a G20 statement calling for greater cooperation on excess industrial capacity and forced-labour concerns in global supply chains.
Most G20 members decline to sign
According to Reuters, only Mexico and Argentina signed the US-led statement, highlighting divisions among the world’s largest economies over trade policy and non-market practices.
The United States argues that industrial overcapacity can distort global markets. China has rejected similar criticism and accused Western governments of using the issue to justify protectionism.
Mexico balances regional and global trade
Mexico’s support is notable as it negotiates with Washington over tariffs and the future of North American trade rules while maintaining commercial links with China and other markets.
