BRUSSELS: Inflation has accelerated across the eurozone as the global energy shock pushes fuel and production costs higher, complicating the European Central Bank’s policy outlook.
Energy prices drive renewed inflation pressure
Recent national readings showed price growth rising faster than expected in several major economies. The increase comes as disruptions to global fuel markets raise costs across transport, industry and household energy.
Higher inflation can increase pressure on the ECB to keep monetary policy tighter or consider further action, but higher borrowing costs also risk slowing economic growth.
Households face renewed cost-of-living challenge
The return of stronger inflation is particularly difficult after several years in which European consumers already faced elevated food, housing and energy costs.
