BOGOTÁ | October 17, 2026. Thousands of people marched in Bogotá and other Colombian cities on October 14 against the economic and security policies of President Abelardo de la Espriella, in the first major national opposition mobilization since he took office in August.

Who joined the demonstrations?

Trade unions, students, teachers, Indigenous organizations and opposition political groups joined demonstrations in Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, Barranquilla and other cities. In Bogotá, marchers converged on Plaza de Bolívar. Former president Gustavo Petro briefly attended the gathering. Organizers objected to proposed cuts affecting education and public programmes, as well as changes to policing rules.

Government reports mostly peaceful protests

Colombia’s Interior Ministry said that, as of 9:15 p.m. on October 14, the president estimated 98% of demonstrations had been peaceful. It reported six arrests and police interventions at six locations across four cities. The government also cited peak attendance of 62,000 people. These figures are official government claims rather than independently verified nationwide totals.

Debate over new police powers

The marches followed publication of Decree 1525, which allows officers to intervene against acts of violence without first completing dialogue with demonstrators. The government says peaceful protest remains protected but vandalism and blockades of essential services cannot be tolerated. Opposition politicians and rights advocates argue the rules could weaken safeguards against excessive force.

Could more protests follow?

Opposition representatives warned that further mobilizations, including a possible general strike in November, could follow if the administration continues policies they oppose. That warning is not confirmation that a strike has been scheduled or will occur.
