Punjab, October 20, 2026: Union Home Minister Amit Shah met families of people who had lost their lives while opposing the trade in “chitta”, a term commonly used for synthetic drugs, during visits to three locations in Punjab.

Meetings with bereaved families

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Shah met families in Mansa, Sangrur and Gurdaspur. At a Vijayadashami event in Ludhiana, he called for further investigation into the deaths and said the central government aimed to make Punjab free of the drug trade by December 31, 2029.

Political criticism and anti-drug campaign

Shah criticised the Punjab government over the drug problem. These allegations are attributed to him and are not presented as independently verified conclusions. The ministry described the visits as part of his engagement with families affected by drug-related violence.
