Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad was more than Gandhi’s residence. It was a centre for experiments in community living, spinning, sanitation, education and nonviolent political action.

Why Gandhi chose the Sabarmati site

The ashram was located between a prison and a cremation ground, locations Gandhi regarded symbolically as appropriate for a life dedicated to service and discipline.

Daily life at the ashram

Residents followed a routine that included prayer, manual work, spinning, cleaning and community responsibilities.

The Salt March connection

On 12 March 1930 Gandhi left Sabarmati Ashram with 78 selected volunteers for the march to Dandi. The journey became the opening phase of the Salt Satyagraha.

Gandhi’s pledge

Gandhi had said he would not return to Sabarmati until the goal associated with the campaign had been achieved. He never permanently returned to the ashram.
