When Richard Attenborough began assembling Gandhi, the central casting question was enormous: who could convincingly portray one of the most recognisable figures of the 20th century?
Many actors were considered
The British Film Institute notes that several major actors were considered over the years, including Alec Guinness, Richard Burton and Dustin Hoffman. Attenborough ultimately chose Ben Kingsley, whose father was Indian.
The decision was significant because the actor was not yet the internationally established screen star audiences would later know. The role became his breakthrough major film performance.
Preparing for Gandhi
Kingsley’s portrayal depended on more than costume and makeup. The performance required an understanding of Gandhi’s physical mannerisms, public speaking style and restrained presence.
For the production’s huge funeral sequence, Kingsley also had to work inside one of the largest crowd scenes ever staged for a film. The Guinness World Records account says more than 300,000 extras participated in the sequence.
A role that changed his career
Gandhi won eight Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Kingsley. Sony Pictures Museum lists Best Picture, Director and Actor among the film’s Oscars.
The performance demonstrated how a relatively unfamiliar actor could become the centre of a major historical epic when the casting, preparation and direction aligned.
Historical resemblance and performance
Playing Gandhi presented a special challenge because audiences already had access to photographs and newsreel images of him. The performance therefore had to feel familiar without becoming a simple imitation.
The film’s success helped establish Kingsley as a major actor and made his portrayal one of the best-known screen interpretations of Gandhi.
