PC game store GOG used its first-ever showcase to outline a broader plan for classic-game preservation, community features and indie publishing. The presentation, held on 5 November to mark the company’s 18th anniversary, included seven Anniversary Editions, a restoration of Wing Commander: Prophecy, a Linux version of GOG GALAXY and a new publishing partnership called Retrovibe by GOG.

Seven classic-game editions arrive on GOG

The headline preservation project is Wing Commander: Prophecy – 30th Anniversary Edition. GOG says its engineers worked with Electronic Arts producer Jim Vessella and members of the game’s modding community to overcome compatibility problems. The restored edition supports EA’s digitised master video sequences and adds native controller support, bringing the 1997 title closer to a ready-to-play experience on modern PCs.

GOG says Prophecy is one of seven Anniversary Editions released as part of the showcase. The lineup includes Wing Commander and Wing Commander II 35th Anniversary Editions, plus 30th Anniversary Editions of Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger, Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom, Privateer 2: The Darkening and Road Rash. The collection brings several older PC releases back to the storefront with updated builds.

Each Anniversary release is packaged with an updated edition and its original Legacy build. GOG says customers who already own a Wing Commander title on the store will receive the matching Anniversary Pack in their library at no extra cost. The company’s announcement did not list new-buyer prices for the editions.

Nox joins the Preservation Program

The showcase also highlighted work on Nox, the 2000 action role-playing game. GOG says it tracked down the compatibility issues that prevented the title from running properly on modern computers and added it to the GOG Preservation Program. The company reports that the programme has delivered more than 1,700 technical fixes across over 300 classic games, supported by more than 10,000 Patrons in 100 countries. Those figures are GOG’s own programme totals.

GOG GALAXY is heading to Linux

Another major platform announcement is that GOG GALAXY is officially planned for Linux. GOG did not give a release date. The Windows and Mac clients are also being reworked to simplify library browsing and improve performance. Importantly for customers who prefer not to rely on a launcher, GOG says GALAXY will remain optional and offline installers will continue to be available.

Retrovibe and GOG Social expand the platform

Retrovibe by GOG is a new publishing partnership intended to support independent developers making standalone games with a classic design sensibility. The debut lineup is led by Project Warlock: Lost Chapters. GOG described the move as its first step into publishing, but its written announcement did not provide a complete release calendar for the label.

GOG also opened sign-ups for the closed beta of GOG Social. The planned community space includes threaded discussions, screenshot galleries, videos, polls, game tagging and spoiler controls. Players will be able to follow topics and provide feedback during the beta. The company has not announced a general public launch date for the service.

Why the announcements matter to PC players

Taken together, the showcase combines two sides of GOG’s identity: selling games without mandatory launcher dependence and investing in the long-term compatibility of older releases. The Linux GALAXY announcement could broaden the client’s reach, while the continued availability of offline installers preserves an option for players who want to keep local copies of their purchases. The restoration programme and the Retrovibe partnership also suggest that GOG wants to work both with established publishers and smaller studios.

For now, the confirmed releases are the Anniversary Editions and the restored titles listed in GOG’s announcement. Linux support, the redesigned desktop client and GOG Social remain developments to watch, with further timing details still to come.
