New York Federal Reserve President John Williams said the US central bank does not need to rush into another interest-rate increase after its September policy move.

Reuters reported that Williams expects one additional increase could be appropriate later this year if inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target.

Inflation remains the focus

The Fed raised its benchmark range by 25 basis points in September to 3.75%-4.00%. Williams said incoming economic data should guide the next decision rather than expectations about a particular meeting.

His comments helped reduce market expectations of an immediate October increase.
