The index fell 6.7 points to 81.9 in September from 88.6 in August. The Conference Board said views of both current conditions and the short-term outlook weakened.

The figures come as U.S. households continue to face higher prices and energy-market uncertainty. More economic data, including employment and inflation figures, are due later this week.
