WASHINGTON: U.S. consumer confidence fell sharply in September, reaching its lowest level in more than a decade as households reported greater concern about the economy.

The Conference Board’s confidence index fell 6.7 points to 81.9. The organization said assessments of current conditions and the short-term outlook both weakened.

The report comes as households contend with elevated prices, energy-market volatility and uncertainty surrounding economic policy.
