WASHINGTON: U.S. consumer confidence fell sharply in September, reaching its lowest level in more than 12 years as households became more concerned about prices and the labor market.

The Conference Board’s index dropped 6.7 points to 81.9 in September, its lowest reading since 2014. The decline came as consumers reported greater concern about future business conditions and employment.

The figures are being watched alongside inflation, job openings and other economic indicators as the Federal Reserve considers its next policy decisions.
