EA Shuts Down BioWare: Mass Effect Project Cancelled as Gaming Industry Faces Layoffs

Computer-generated English audio

Gaming Desk | October 22, 2026. Electronic Arts is closing BioWare, the studio behind the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises, as part of a restructuring that includes job cuts and project cancellations.

What has been announced?

Gaming publication Gematsu reported on October 21 that EA is laying off approximately 400 employees across its business, including roughly 50 at BioWare. The report cited company communication and Bloomberg reporting; figures may change as restructuring proceeds.

What happens to Mass Effect?

The next Mass Effect game, which was in early development, has been cancelled according to the same report. That does not mean previously released Mass Effect games will disappear from players’ libraries. Availability and support for existing titles should be checked through official storefronts.

Why does the closure matter?

BioWare helped shape narrative-driven role-playing games with companion relationships, player choices and science-fiction world-building. Its closure highlights pressure on large publishers to concentrate investment in fewer projects.

EA says it will continue to invest in several other franchises, including sports titles and Apex Legends. See NewsNationOnline’s earlier EA coverage for context.
