US-Iran Negotiators Face Major Hurdles as Mediators Push Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

CAIRO: Regional mediators are continuing efforts to broker an agreement between the United States and Iran that could help end months of conflict and restore normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Shipping, sanctions and nuclear inspections in talks

Officials familiar with the discussions told the Associated Press that proposals involve reopening the strategic waterway, sanctions and frozen assets, as well as nuclear inspections and other security conditions.

The sides remain divided over sequencing and guarantees. Iran has sought sanctions relief while Washington has pressed for verifiable commitments.

Global economy has a stake

The Strait of Hormuz is critical to global energy trade. Disruption has affected shipping and contributed to wider economic pressure, making any durable agreement internationally significant.
