New Delhi: The Supreme Court is hearing a suo motu matter concerning the future of the 135-year-old Central Secretariat Library as the Central Vista redevelopment changes the government-office landscape around Shastri Bhavan.
The library occupies around 5,500 square metres across four floors and houses more than 8.5 lakh books, including rare publications and government records.
Dispute over adequate replacement space
The Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has said space for the library is provided in the redevelopment plan. However, concerns have been raised that the space identified so far is inadequate for the institution’s collection and functions.
The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance following reporting on the uncertainty surrounding the library’s relocation. The case places preservation, public access and infrastructure planning under judicial scrutiny.
