NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of concerns over the absence of adequate space for the Central Secretariat Library in the Central Vista redevelopment plan and is set to hear the matter.
Library’s future enters judicial scrutiny
The Central Secretariat Library is an important institutional resource for government officials, researchers and scholars. The court’s intervention puts the preservation and accommodation of the library within the larger redevelopment under formal judicial consideration.
The proceedings will determine what directions, if any, are required. Taking suo motu cognisance does not itself establish wrongdoing by any authority.
Public institutions within mega redevelopment
The case raises a wider planning question: how major government redevelopment projects accommodate libraries, archives and other institutions whose value may not be measured only in floor area or commercial terms.
