NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court’s decision to take up the Central Secretariat Library issue has opened a wider debate over how India’s major redevelopment projects preserve public knowledge institutions.
More than a question of office space
The Central Secretariat Library serves government officials and researchers and contains a substantial institutional collection. Concerns over its accommodation within the Central Vista plan prompted the court to take suo motu cognisance of the matter.
The case is scheduled for hearing Monday. The court will consider the material before it and decide whether any directions are necessary.
Planning for institutional continuity
Large redevelopment projects often involve difficult trade-offs between new construction, heritage, accessibility and continuity of public services. Libraries and archives require specialised storage, access and preservation conditions, making their relocation more complex than ordinary office moves.
