Solapur Teacher Dies After Two-Wheeler Hits Poorly Marked Speed Breaker; Safety Questions Grow

Computer-generated English audio

Solapur: The death of teacher Sheela Sujit Hawale after a two-wheeler hit a speed breaker near the Collector’s Office has triggered anger over the visibility and safety of traffic-calming structures on city roads.

According to Sakal and Pudhari, Hawale was travelling with her husband on October 1 after attending an education-related meeting when their two-wheeler hit the speed breaker on the Sat Rasta–Patrakar Bhavan road. She fell and suffered a serious head injury and later died during treatment.

Residents question markings and warnings

Local reports say the white markings on the speed breaker had faded and residents raised questions about reflectors, warning boards and lighting. Relatives and activists have alleged that markings and signage were improved only after the fatal crash.

Those claims require official examination. The precise circumstances of the accident and any responsibility for road maintenance remain matters for the competent authorities.

More riders reportedly injured at same location

Pudhari reported that two more people were injured after a two-wheeler encountered the same speed breaker on Friday night, intensifying demands for an audit of speed breakers across Solapur.

Speed breakers can reduce dangerous speeds, but they must be designed, marked and signposted properly so that a safety measure does not itself become a hazard.
