PUNE: Pune’s southwest monsoon retreat has begun unusually early. The India Meteorological Department said withdrawal reached Pune on October 3, nearly a week ahead of the city’s normal date around October 9.
Dry northerly winds take over
IMD linked the withdrawal to declining rainfall, reduced cloud cover and humidity, the disappearance of southwest monsoon flow and the establishment of dry northerly winds.
The shift has also brought warmer conditions. Pune recently recorded 34.8°C, among its highest October maximum temperatures in more than a decade, and forecasters expect elevated daytime temperatures to persist in the near term.
Early retreat matters for water planning
The end of monsoon rainfall influences reservoir management, agriculture and groundwater recharge across the district. An early withdrawal therefore has implications beyond day-to-day weather.
