MUMBAI: Mumbai’s transport map could be heading for a fundamental change. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has unveiled a master plan built around 10 ring roads, bringing roads, tunnels, sea links and expressways into one interconnected regional network.
From north-south dependence to multiple routes
Mumbai’s geography has historically pushed a huge share of movement into north-south corridors. MMRDA’s concept aims to create multiple alternatives across the wider metropolitan region, allowing motorists to move between major corridors without repeatedly entering the same congested routes.
The plan combines existing, ongoing and proposed infrastructure. Its real impact will depend on how effectively junctions, tolling, public transport interfaces and last-mile links are coordinated.
Why this matters beyond motorists
A connected regional network can influence housing, jobs, logistics and business location decisions across the MMR. But large road programmes also require careful land, environmental and traffic planning so that new capacity does not simply move bottlenecks elsewhere.
