IMF Urges Mexico to Do More to Put Public Debt on Declining Path

MEXICO CITY: The International Monetary Fund says Mexico needs to intensify efforts to put public debt on a declining trajectory even as fiscal consolidation continues.

Growth forecast remains modest

Following an Article IV consultation mission, the IMF projected Mexico’s economy would grow 1.5% in 2026 and 1.8% in 2027. It said external uncertainty continues to constrain growth.

The Fund also recommended maintaining a moderately tight monetary stance to reinforce progress on inflation.

Trade uncertainty clouds outlook

Mexico’s economy is deeply integrated with the United States through manufacturing and cross-border supply chains. Changes in tariffs and the future of regional trade arrangements therefore have major implications for investment and growth.
