Lebanon Seeks New IMF Staff-Level Deal as Economic Recovery Talks Continue

BEIRUT: Lebanon is seeking a new staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund as the government works to advance economic reforms and stabilize public finances. Reuters reported on September 28 that Finance Minister Yassine Jaber said Beirut hopes to make progress in discussions with the IMF.

The negotiations come as Lebanon continues to address the consequences of a prolonged financial crisis. A new agreement would depend on progress on economic and financial measures discussed with the Fund.

Why the IMF talks matter

IMF negotiations are closely watched because any agreement could influence Lebanon’s access to international financial support and the pace of economic reforms. The next steps will depend on the details agreed between Lebanese authorities and the IMF.
