Mexico Moves to Bar Dual Citizens From Presidency Under Fast-Tracked Reform

MEXICO CITY: Mexico is fast-tracking a constitutional reform that would require candidates for president and several other senior elected offices to renounce any dual citizenship.

Sheinbaum backs proposed restriction

President Claudia Sheinbaum has defended the proposal as a safeguard against foreign interference. The measure would also apply to state governors and candidates for mayor of Mexico City.

Critics argue that the restriction could infringe political rights and affect opposition figures with connections abroad.

Constitutional change carries long-term consequences

Because the proposal concerns eligibility for some of Mexico’s most powerful elected offices, its final language and implementation will be closely watched. Debate is likely to focus on national sovereignty and equal political rights.
