England World Cup 2027 Schedule: Bangladesh Opener to New Zealand Group Finale

Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, a 2027 Cricket World Cup venue

England’s complete group-stage itinerary for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 is confirmed, beginning against Bangladesh in Windhoek on October 8 and ending against New Zealand in Gqeberha on October 23. Between those fixtures, England will face Sri Lanka, co-hosts South Africa and Qualifier B as they try to earn a place in the new Super 7 phase.

The schedule places England in Group B and keeps India, Australia and Pakistan out of their opening pool. That is only part of the picture, however. New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka provide three major tests, while Bangladesh and the final qualifier make this a group in which every match carries qualification value.

England’s five group matches

  • October 8: Bangladesh, Windhoek
  • October 13: Sri Lanka, Windhoek
  • October 16: South Africa, Bloemfontein
  • October 20: Qualifier B, Durban
  • October 23: New Zealand, Gqeberha

Match 1: Bangladesh in Windhoek

England enter the main group stage on October 8, one day after India and Australia open Group A in Cape Town. The Namibia Cricket Ground hosts England-Bangladesh, giving England an immediate assignment away from the South African venues that dominate the later tournament.

In a five-game group, the opener matters because there is limited room to recover from a poor sequence. Three teams qualify automatically from each group, with one fourth-placed side also progressing based on its record compared with the fourth-place team in the other group.

Match 2: Sri Lanka, again in Namibia

England remain in Windhoek to face Sri Lanka on October 13. The ground’s role in the tournament is unusually important: it stages all three Super Series matches and three group games. Namibia is hosting senior ICC tournament matches for the first time, adding a historic dimension to England’s opening leg.

Match 3: South Africa in Bloemfontein

England’s first group game in South Africa comes against the co-hosts on October 16 at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein. South Africa’s familiarity with home conditions makes this one of the most significant fixtures on England’s initial schedule. It also arrives at the midpoint of England’s group campaign, when the qualification picture should be becoming clearer.

Match 4: Qualifier B in Durban

England then travel to Kingsmead in Durban on October 20 to meet Qualifier B. The identity of that opponent will come through the tournament’s unusual opening mechanism. The second, third and fourth finishers from the World Cup Qualifier play a Super Series in Windhoek, and the winner joins Group B.

That means Qualifier B will arrive having already played high-pressure matches immediately before the group stage. England will know the identity of the opponent only after the qualification process is completed.

Match 5: New Zealand in Gqeberha

England close against New Zealand at St George’s Park on October 23. As the penultimate day of the group phase, this match could determine an automatic top-three position, fourth-place survival or seeding implications for the next stage. Bangladesh and Qualifier B also play on October 23, while Group A concludes the following day.

What England need to reach the Super 7

A top-three finish in Group B guarantees progression. Fourth can also be enough if England have a stronger record than the fourth-placed team in Group A under the tournament regulations. Once through, however, England receive no points advantage from their group results.

The Super 7 starts on October 25 and all seven teams begin from zero. Each plays six matches, with the top four reaching the semi-finals. England are listed in the AB4 pre-seeded schedule position, but this is not guaranteed qualification. A team replacing England would inherit that fixture slot.

Travel becomes part of England’s challenge

The itinerary moves from Namibia to three different South African cities. England must adapt from Windhoek to Bloemfontein, Durban and Gqeberha over a little more than two weeks. Tournament cricket often turns on recovery and adaptability as much as the headline matchups, particularly when conditions vary across venues.

Potential opponents beyond the group

Avoiding India and Australia is only a group-stage fact. If England progress, the Super 7 brings the surviving teams into one league. England could then meet India, Australia, Pakistan or Afghanistan depending on who qualifies from Group A. The reset ensures those matches carry fresh points rather than being influenced by group-stage results.

NewsNationOnline’s World Cup format guide explains the three-stage structure in detail. The complete official England pathway and tournament fixture list are available through the ICC schedule announcement.

England’s first objective

England’s route is now clear: five matches, four cities and three countries represented within their group journey. Avoiding India and Australia may dominate the first reaction to the draw, but England’s actual task is defined by Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Qualifier B and New Zealand. Survive that sequence and a completely new six-match race begins in the Super 7.
