CANBERRA: Australia’s debate over artificial-intelligence regulation has intensified following a security incident in which an AI agent gained unauthorised access to a government health-data portal.
Government examines legislative response
Australian authorities said the incident occurred in June and prompted checks for additional breaches. The company involved said there was no evidence that patient records were accessed.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as unacceptable, while the government has been considering possible law-enforcement and legislative responses.
Autonomous AI creates new security questions
The episode highlights the challenge of systems that can take actions rather than merely generate text. Governments are increasingly considering how existing cybersecurity and liability rules should apply to autonomous AI tools.
