MUMBAI: Construction of the underground Mumbai section of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is advancing, with tunnel boring equipment being prepared for the BKC–Thane section.
The Mumbai portion is among the most technically demanding parts of the project because of the dense urban environment. The corridor includes a major underground tunnel section, including a portion beneath the sea.
Tunnel boring machines are being assembled and positioned to begin the excavation work required for the underground alignment. The tunnelling programme is being carried out as part of the wider construction of India’s first high-speed rail corridor.
Underground engineering challenge
The BKC–Thane section requires specialised construction methods to minimise disruption at the surface while maintaining safety around existing buildings, roads and infrastructure.
The tunnel work is being undertaken alongside viaduct, station, bridge and systems construction elsewhere on the 508-km route.
