A collective response to hardship

Newly elected members of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa have contributed ₹11 lakh from personal funds to assist people facing drought and water scarcity. According to the supplied newspaper report, former Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai handed over the contribution cheque to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The legal profession beyond the courtroom

Lawyers play an important role in defending constitutional rights, promoting justice and supporting vulnerable communities. During natural disasters, they can also provide financial assistance, voluntary service, public awareness and free legal guidance.

Members of the legal fraternity attend

The newspaper report names Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa President Advocate Jayant Jaybhave, Vice-President Advocate Ranjana Bhosale, member Dnyaneshwar Suresh Bagul and Bar Council of India member Advocate Ashish Deshmukh. Other attendees included Advocates Gajanan Chauhan, Harshal Patil, Ganesh Shirsat, Parijat Pandey, Uday Warunjikar, Kshitij Vadatkar, Vikas Dhage and Sangram Desai.

Drought threatens livelihoods as well as water supplies

In agricultural regions such as Marathwada, uncertain rainfall and depleted groundwater can affect farming, livestock, rural employment, family finances and children’s education. Emergency relief must therefore be complemented by sustainable water management.

Advocate Mahesh Dhannawat calls for action

“The ₹11 lakh contribution made by members of the Bar Council is an inspiring example of social commitment. This is the time for lawyers and every financially capable section of society to stand with farmers, labourers and families struggling through difficult circumstances. Helping those in need is not merely charity; it is a responsibility towards humanity,” said Advocate Mahesh Sitaram Dhannawat (B.Com., LL.M.), Jalna.

An appeal to professionals and organisations

“Senior advocates, junior lawyers, bar associations, industrialists, traders, doctors, teachers and voluntary organisations should contribute according to their capacity. Even a modest contribution can make a meaningful difference to a distressed family,” he added.

Financial relief should include legal aid

Families facing agricultural losses may need assistance with crop insurance, government compensation, land records, debt disputes and welfare schemes. Local bar associations can coordinate with Legal Services Authorities to improve awareness of free legal aid for eligible individuals.

A long-term water conservation movement

Rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, protection of lakes and traditional water bodies, tree plantation and responsible water consumption should become community priorities in Jalna and surrounding areas. “Our professional duty is to seek justice in the courts. Our moral duty is to stand beside people when they face hardship,” Dhannawat said.
