The human story behind a court order

The legal history of Ayodhya is not only a chronology of litigation. It also includes the experiences of judges, litigants, administrators and ordinary worshippers. Among its most unusual narratives is the account left by Faizabad District Judge Krishna Mohan Pandey, whose 1 February 1986 order opened the locks at the disputed Ram Janmabhoomi–Babri Masjid site.

What Judge Pandey said he saw

In his 1991 memoir Voice of Conscience, Pandey recalled a black monkey sitting on the roof of the courtroom and holding the flagpost throughout the proceedings. According to the account reproduced by Law Trend, people offered the animal groundnuts and fruit, but it did not accept them. He wrote that the monkey departed after the order was pronounced, reportedly at 4:40 p.m. When the district magistrate and senior superintendent of police escorted him home, he said he saw the animal again on his bungalow’s veranda. He saluted it and understood the encounter as an indication of divine power. Author Hemant Sharma also discussed the story in writing about Ayodhya. This is a recollection, not independently verified evidence of supernatural intervention; it was not a judicial finding.

What happened on 1 February 1986

The dispute had a long and complex background. After idols were placed inside the structure in December 1949, access to the premises was restricted and litigation continued. In 1986, proceedings concerning the locked gates came before District Judge Pandey. Advocate Umesh Chandra Pandey had sought access for worshippers. The district judge examined the request and questions of law and order, and directed the opening of the locks. Hindu devotees were then allowed access for worship. Muslim parties contested the move and its implications. Importantly, the 1986 order addressed access; it did not settle title to the disputed land.

A controversial decision and the judge’s later career

Law Trend’s historical report says Pandey faced threats and professional setbacks after the decision. It describes a later judicial elevation process in which his name was reportedly recommended but not approved, and mentions allegations of harassment involving his daughter. These are claims in the published historical account. The available article does not by itself establish the motives of government officials or independently verify every allegation. It is important not to turn reported grievances into proven findings.

The long road to the Supreme Court

The dispute became one of India’s most consequential legal and social controversies. On 6 December 1992, the Babri Masjid was demolished. The Supreme Court later characterized that demolition as a violation of the rule of law. On 9 November 2019, a five-judge Constitution Bench unanimously resolved the title dispute by directing that the disputed site be entrusted to a trust for construction of a temple and that a separate five-acre plot in Ayodhya be allotted for a mosque. The judgment was based on legal evidence and principles, not the monkey story.

Ram Lalla’s consecration and the changing city

On 22 January 2024, Ram Lalla’s consecration ceremony was held in the new temple. In subsequent years Ayodhya has seen expansion of transport links, accommodation and pilgrimage facilities. On 16 October 2026, temple construction committee chairman Nripendra Misra reported that 148 of 150 works in the temple complex had been completed and handed to the trust. Work on the outer enclosure and related finishing remained, with lighting targeted for 15 November. These were the reported status and targets, not confirmation that every remaining project had finished.

Ayodhya on 3 November 2026

As the city prepares for Deepotsav, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inspected Ram Katha Park, Ram Ki Paidi and the Saryu riverfront on 2 November, asking officials to ensure security and visitor facilities. Reports indicate Deepotsav programmes from 5 to 7 November and Diwali on 8 November; exact visitor arrangements may change. Alongside celebrations, sanitation, river protection, traffic control, accessibility and livelihoods are important public responsibilities.

The distinction between faith and law

For devotees, the monkey narrative carries spiritual meaning connected to Hanuman, the devoted servant of Rama. For historians and lawyers, the order must be examined through its text, legal context and subsequent court decisions. Respecting the personal experience of a judge does not require treating it as proof of a miracle. The story of Ayodhya is best understood with both historical sensitivity and fidelity to constitutional principles.
