LOS ANGELES: Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame Encore has returned to the top of the North American box office, earning an estimated $26 million domestically and $86 million worldwide during its re-release weekend.

The new theatrical run has pushed the lifetime worldwide total of the 2019 blockbuster to about $2.88 billion, according to Variety. The film is now only tens of millions of dollars behind Avatar in the worldwide rankings.

The re-release comes ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for December and is expected to bring several major Marvel characters and stars back to the big screen.

The strong performance shows continued audience interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and gives Disney a major theatrical headline ahead of its next Avengers chapter.
