SEOUL: Two of South Korea’s major megachurches are investigating suspected cyberattacks that may have compromised personal data belonging to hundreds of thousands of congregants, raising fresh concerns about the use of artificial intelligence in cybercrime.
AI tools may have played a role
According to the churches and cybersecurity specialists, evidence indicates AI tools may have been used during the attacks. Investigators are still assessing how the intrusions occurred, what information was exposed and who was responsible.
The incidents underline the growing cybersecurity challenge for religious and community organisations that hold large databases containing names, contact information and other potentially sensitive records.
