Latvia is commonly described through four cultural and historical regions—Vidzeme, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Latgale—along with Riga and its surrounding area.
Vidzeme
Vidzeme includes Sigulda, Cēsis and much of Gauja National Park. It is known for forests, river valleys, castles and outdoor activities.
Kurzeme
Kurzeme occupies much of western Latvia and includes Kuldīga, Liepāja and Ventspils. The region is known for its Baltic Sea coastline and historic towns.
Zemgale
Zemgale is Latvia’s fertile southern region and includes Jelgava and Rundāle, with agricultural landscapes and important historic estates.
Latgale
Latgale in eastern Latvia is known for lakes, distinctive cultural traditions, pottery, churches and towns such as Daugavpils.
Riga Region
Riga is Latvia’s main urban and cultural center, with easy access to Jūrmala and nearby nature destinations.
Coast and Nature
Latvia’s Baltic coastline stretches across several regions, while forests, wetlands and national parks provide extensive outdoor opportunities.
How to Plan
For a short trip, combine Riga with Vidzeme or the coast. Longer trips can include Kuldīga, Liepāja, Zemgale and Latgale.
