Before becoming one of the central figures of India’s independence movement, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi spent more than two decades in South Africa. The period from 1893 to 1914 was crucial in the development of his political methods and ideas.

The 1893 railway incident

Gandhi’s experiences of racial discrimination in South Africa became an important part of the story he later told about his political awakening. The well-known incident in which he was removed from a first-class railway compartment at Pietermaritzburg became symbolic of this period.

Building an Indian community organisation

Gandhi helped organise the Indian community and founded the Natal Indian Congress in 1894. His work combined political advocacy, legal activity and public campaigns.

From protest to Satyagraha

During struggles over discriminatory laws, Gandhi developed the method he called Satyagraha. It emphasised nonviolent resistance, willingness to accept suffering and persistence in opposing injustice.

Phoenix Settlement and Tolstoy Farm

Gandhi established communities that experimented with simple living, shared work and education. These experiences influenced his later ashram life in India.

Return to India

Gandhi returned to India in 1915. His South African experiences provided an important foundation for the Satyagraha campaigns he later led in Champaran, Kheda and across the country.
