John Schlesinger’s Midnight Cowboy was released in 1969 and received an X rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. Despite the restrictive rating, the film became a major critical and commercial success and won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

A landmark moment

The movie’s success showed that adult-oriented stories could reach mainstream audiences. The rating was later changed to R in 1971 after the rating system was revised.
