October 25, 2026: Horror has become one of the most important forces at the US box office this year, and the trend is proving bigger than the Halloween season. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that horror’s share of domestic ticket revenue has risen from about 5% in 2016 to 16% in 2026.

The report put the domestic box office above $8.2 billion at the time of publication, with horror contributing approximately $1.3 billion. The genre could approach or surpass its 2025 record if the remaining months deliver strong releases.

Low budgets, big audiences

One striking part of this year’s story is the success of films that did not begin as traditional studio tentpoles. The Chronicle highlighted Obsession, made on a reported budget of about 0,000 and earning more than 0 million worldwide, and Backrooms, which grew out of filmmaker Kane Parsons’ online horror work.

Such examples show how an original idea and an engaged audience can sometimes compete with expensive franchise productions. A low production budget does not guarantee a hit, of course, but it can lower the amount a film needs to earn before it becomes financially viable.

Why audiences choose horror in cinemas

Horror is particularly suited to a shared theatrical experience. Sudden sounds, suspense and collective reactions can feel more intense when experienced with a crowd. Younger viewers also discover new films through social platforms, clips and recommendations, which can turn an online following into ticket sales.

The genre offers creative flexibility, too. Filmmakers can build tension around a limited number of characters or locations, experiment with unfamiliar performers and tell stories that do not require huge visual-effects budgets.

Not every horror release succeeds

Strong genre-wide numbers should not be mistaken for guaranteed success for every title. Reviews, release timing, competition, marketing and audience word of mouth still matter. A sequel with a familiar brand can underperform, while an original film can grow over several weekends if viewers keep recommending it.

What comes next

With titles such as Clayface arriving in October and more genre releases planned for the holiday period, horror’s momentum will be tested again. The broader takeaway for Hollywood is that audiences continue to seek distinctive experiences in theatres—and those experiences do not always require the biggest budget.
