Released in 1933, Baby Face became controversial for its frank treatment of sex, ambition and power. The film arrived just before Hollywood began enforcing the Production Code much more aggressively.

Why the film mattered

Its story challenged conventional morality and showed how filmmakers could use suggestion and symbolism to discuss subjects that later became heavily restricted. The film is now frequently studied as an example of Pre-Code cinema.
