Many students understand more English than they are willing to speak. The reason is often not a lack of ideas. It may be fear of making mistakes, being laughed at, forgetting a word or being corrected in front of the class.

Confidence grows through safe practice

Students need repeated opportunities to speak without feeling that every sentence is a test. Pair conversations, small-group discussions and rehearsed answers can provide a lower-pressure starting point. As confidence grows, teachers can gradually increase the level of public speaking.

Correct without stopping communication

Constant interruption can make hesitant learners even quieter. Teachers can allow a student to complete an idea and then discuss a few useful corrections with the class. Not every error needs immediate correction, particularly during fluency-focused activities.

  • Use pair work before whole-class speaking.
  • Reward effort and participation as well as accuracy.
  • Teach useful phrases students can reuse.
  • Give students preparation time before presentations.
  • Never make mistakes a reason for ridicule.

Language learning is a gradual process

The NCF Foundational Stage framework stresses that children learn languages best in rich, natural environments where language is used meaningfully and purposefully. Read the NCF Foundational Stage language guidance.

The goal is not to remove every mistake. The goal is to help students become willing language users who can learn from mistakes and continue communicating.
