Students do not become comfortable in a language simply by completing grammar exercises. They need frequent chances to hear the language, respond to it and use it for purposes that feel real. Everyday conversation is one of the simplest ways to build that habit.
Start with familiar situations
Teachers can begin with short classroom exchanges: greetings, attendance, requests, descriptions of objects, questions about homework and conversations about the day’s activities. These situations give learners a reason to communicate instead of asking them to produce sentences without context.
Build a routine
- Begin with a two-minute English conversation.
- Ask students to discuss a familiar picture or object.
- Use pair work before asking students to speak to the whole class.
- Allow students to repeat useful phrases in different situations.
- Correct important errors without interrupting every attempt to communicate.
Pair and group activities are particularly useful because more students get speaking time. A teacher can circulate, listen and note common language problems for later feedback. This creates a classroom where practice is part of learning rather than something reserved for an occasional oral test.
Conversation and multilingual classrooms
India’s education framework recognises multilingualism as an important educational resource. Using students’ home or regional languages to support understanding does not prevent English development.
