China has introduced a nationwide mortgage interest subsidy for eligible first-time homebuyers as part of a fresh package aimed at stabilising the property market and supporting domestic demand.
The measure provides an annual interest subsidy of one percentage point for qualifying new commercial housing loans, subject to conditions including property size and purchase price. Reuters reported that the support can apply for up to five years.
Why Beijing is targeting housing
China’s property sector has faced a prolonged downturn that has weighed on household confidence, construction activity and local government finances. Policymakers are therefore combining housing measures with credit support for infrastructure and technology.
The latest announcement comes alongside September economic indicators showing improvement in manufacturing and non-manufacturing activity.
