NAGOYA, Japan — Philippines tennis star Alex Eala’s bid for Asian Games women’s singles gold ended on October 1 when China’s Wang Xiyu fought back to win their semifinal 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Eala, the top seed, will take bronze, while Wang advances to an all-China final against Zhang Shuai.
Wang fights back
Eala won the opening set 6-3, but Wang changed the momentum and won the next two sets. The Chinese player, ranked 85th, used her consistency to move through the semifinal and secure a place in the final. Zhang Shuai reached the other half of the final after defeating Yulia Putintseva.
LA28 qualification also at stake
The Asian Games singles winner earns an Olympic qualification quota for Los Angeles 2028 under the competition pathway. Eala’s semifinal defeat therefore ended both her gold-medal campaign and that direct route to an Olympic place through this event.
Reuters reported that Eala said she had no regrets about representing the Philippines at the Games despite the wider tennis-calendar consequences. Her campaign still produced another Asian Games singles bronze and added to her continental medal record.
China reaches an all-China final
Wang’s victory means China will have two players in the final. Zhang brings extensive international experience, while Wang enters after defeating the top seed. The final will now decide the women’s singles gold medal.
