The November 2026 full moon, known as the Beaver Moon, is a supermoon. It reaches its exact full phase at 9:53 a.m. Eastern time (14:53 UTC) on Tuesday, November 24, 2026. Because that moment falls in daylight across North America, the best views come on the evenings of Monday, Nov. 23, and Tuesday, Nov. 24, when the nearly full moon rises in the east around sunset.

It is the first of three supermoons in a row, followed by the December Cold Moon on Dec. 24 and the January 2027 Wolf Moon. No telescope is needed to enjoy any of them.

The moon looks full to the eye for about a day on either side of the exact moment, so the timing above matters mainly for photographers and record-keepers. In India, the full phase happens in the evening, after moonrise, which makes Nov. 24 an especially good night there.

What makes it a supermoon

The moon’s orbit is an ellipse, so its distance from Earth changes through the month. A supermoon is a full moon that happens close to perigee, the point where the moon is nearest to Earth. At the time of this full moon, the moon will be about 360,766 kilometers (224,170 miles) away, according to the ephemeris site TheSkyLive.

NASA notes that a supermoon can look up to about 14% larger and 30% brighter than a full moon at its farthest point. In practice, most people will notice a bright moon rather than a dramatically bigger one, because there is nothing next to it in the sky to compare it with.

How and when to watch

  • Watch moonrise: look toward the east-northeast around sunset on Nov. 23 and 24. A moon near the horizon often looks larger and has an orange tint, an effect called the moon illusion.
  • Find a clear horizon: a park, beach, open field or upper-floor window works best.
  • Look for star clusters: this full moon sits near the Pleiades and Hyades clusters in Taurus, which binoculars show well.
  • Photograph with a foreground: a tree line, building or hill gives the moon a sense of scale. Use a tripod and a short exposure, because the full moon is very bright.
  • Check the weather: late-November skies are often cloudy in northern states, so watch your local forecast and plan for either night.

For a closer look, our beginner’s guide to seeing the moon’s craters explains why the days before and after full moon show more surface detail. The Leonid meteor shower also peaks earlier in November, before the bright moon washes out fainter meteors.

Why it is called the Beaver Moon

The name is usually linked to North American seasons. Beavers spend late autumn finishing their lodges and dams before ponds freeze, and November was also the traditional start of the fur-trapping season. Other names for November’s full moon include the Frost Moon, the Freezing Moon and the Mourning Moon. You can learn more about lunar phases and distance on NASA’s Moon page.
