US Supreme Court Opens New Term With Major Cases on Voting, Religion and Immigration

WASHINGTON: The US Supreme Court begins its new nine-month term with a docket containing major disputes over voting rules, religious rights, firearms and immigration.

Conservative majority remains central

The court retains a 6-3 conservative majority. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, its two most senior conservative members, remain influential as several politically consequential cases move toward arguments and decisions.

Among the matters before the court are disputes involving Arizona voter-identification requirements and religious-rights questions in publicly funded education.

Decisions could shape national law

Supreme Court rulings establish binding constitutional and federal-law precedents, meaning decisions in the new term could affect policy well beyond the individual states involved.
