The Health Deparment has proposed to build a new hospital to replace the existing infrastructure at the Government Hospital in Srirangam.
Started as a small dispensary in 1873 during the erstwhile British rule, the hospital has grown into the status of taluk hospital. The public healthcare facility, on Gandhi Road, in front of the new bus terminal in Srirangam, gets 750 outpatients daily and up to 120 inpatients on an average. It functions on about 3 acres of land belonging to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department. The Directorate of Medical Services pays a monthly rent of ₹80,000. The hospital with the sanctioned strength of 21 doctors offers all basic services and performs basic surgeries.
The hospital has the departments of General Medicine, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Ear Nose Throat, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Radiology, Labour Ward and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Dialysis facility is available.
While some of the buildings were constructed about 20 years ago, some of the buildings such as casualty block and male medical ward are more than 150 years old and are in a dilapidated state. The male medical ward was condemned as unfit for occupation a few years ago and it has been shut.
According to sources, about 50% of the buildings of the existing infrastructure are in a good condition and the remaining can no longer be used. Taking into account the various aspects, the Directorate of Medical Services has proposed to create new infrastructure with modern facilities for the Srirangam GH.
Confirming the development, HR&CE Minister S. Ramesh said here on Saturday that it had been decided to build new infrastructure for the hospital. Discussion was on whether to create all infrastructure at the existing premises or at a new place. It was aimed at providing the latest medical facilities and better healthcare to the targeted patients. A formal decision would be announced soon.
