Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Cyber police are investigating a major fraud in which a 75-year-old woman from Venkatesh Nagar was allegedly kept under a so-called ‘digital arrest’ for 14 days and cheated of ₹3 crore.
According to the complaint filed with Jinsi police, the fraudsters allegedly posed as law-enforcement officers and claimed that a bank account opened in the woman’s name was linked to money connected with terrorist activity.
Threats allegedly used to maintain pressure
The complainant alleged that callers threatened to arrest her son and harm her family, keeping her under intense pressure from September 18 to October 1 while inducing her to transfer money.
Police trying to trace accused
Cyber police are working to identify the people behind the calls and trace the movement of the money. The precise loss has been reported differently by some outlets; the FIR-based Times of India report places it at ₹3 crore, which NewsNationOnline is using pending further official clarification.
No legitimate ‘digital arrest’
Citizens should be suspicious of anyone claiming they can place a person under arrest through a video call or demanding that money be moved to a ‘safe’ account. Do not transfer funds because a caller appears in uniform or claims to represent police; independently contact the relevant agency or cybercrime authorities.
