NAGOYA: Thailand’s Puripol Boonson added the men’s 200m gold medal to his 100m title on Sunday, completing a sprint double at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
Boonson produced a powerful performance on a rain-affected track in Nagoya to become one of the standout athletes of the athletics programme. His 200m victory followed his success in the 100m, giving Thailand two major sprint titles.
The 200m result also underlined Boonson’s status as one of Asia’s leading young sprinters. Reuters reported that he broke the 20-second barrier in the event and matched the Asian record of 20.00 seconds.
The Thai athlete has previously attracted attention for becoming the first Southeast Asian runner to break the 10-second barrier in the 100m. His Asian Games campaign has now added a major continental double to his record.
Rain has been a recurring feature of the athletics competition in Nagoya, making conditions difficult for several athletes. Despite the weather, the sprint finals produced some of the most watched moments of the Games.
