Pune: Pune Metro is strengthening peak-hour operations with trains planned at five-minute intervals, a significant service improvement for commuters using the city’s expanding rapid-transit network.
Higher frequency is one of the most effective ways to make an urban Metro more useful because it reduces waiting time and increases the number of passengers that can be moved during the busiest periods.
Frequency can change commuting habits
For a passenger deciding between a private vehicle and public transport, total journey time includes the wait at the station. A five-minute service makes spontaneous Metro travel easier and can reduce the need to plan around a timetable.
The benefits will be greatest where feeder buses, walking routes and last-mile services connect reliably with stations. Frequency inside the Metro system alone cannot solve the first- and last-mile problem.
Growing network, growing expectations
As Pune continues investing in Metro extensions, passengers will increasingly judge the network on reliability, crowd management, interchange convenience and frequency rather than simply the number of kilometres constructed.
