Pune: Around 1,700 driving-licence holders in Pune are facing suspension or cancellation as transport authorities intensify action against drunk driving and other serious traffic violations.
The action represents a shift from routine fines towards consequences that can directly affect a motorist’s legal ability to drive. Authorities have identified cases involving serious violations and are processing them under applicable rules.
Why licence action matters
A monetary fine may be treated by some repeat offenders as a temporary cost. Suspension or cancellation carries a much stronger deterrent because it restricts driving privileges and can affect work and daily mobility.
Road safety enforcement is most effective when it combines visible policing, fair legal procedure, consistent penalties and public awareness. Licence holders facing action should receive due process, while dangerous driving must be dealt with firmly.
Road discipline remains the larger goal
Pune’s rapid growth has placed enormous pressure on its road network. Enforcement alone cannot solve congestion, but action against drunk driving and serious violations can reduce avoidable risks for pedestrians, two-wheeler riders and other road users.
